Charlotte is the largest city in the state of North Carolina. The entire state’s population is growing, but much of it is happening in and around the Queen City, as locals have nicknamed their city once named after a princess. Over a million people call Mecklenburg County home, roughly 10 percent of the state’s population overall, and of that million, nearly 90 percent live within the city boundaries of Charlotte itself.
Much of the population growth has come from those moving from the northern states, although interestingly not all of it comes directly. Some people move from up north to places like Florida and then move again to North Carolina to be closer to their old family. Such locals are affectionately known as ‘half-backs.’
